Colorado "High" School Buying Back Yearbooks From Students For Drug Content
May 27, 2007

High school yearbooks are supposed to be a treasured compilation of school friends' portraits, various school event photos, quotations and remembrances, best ofs and nots and highlights of student academics and extra curricular activities.

But the Conifer, Colorado high school class of 2007, got an extra surprise this year in their yearbook. A number of pages in the yearbook include photographs of students smoking marijuana and consuming alcohol.

The photographs are accompanied with text and quotes that school officials say clearly condone smoking pot and illegal drinking of booze.

However, if the issue is taken up by a group like the ACLU, then it may become a free speech case to keep an eye on.

Yet, as the infamous Hazelwood case of 1987 reminds us, students have limited protections under the Constitution when the school room is equated in to the picture.

Man Bites Off Wife's Lip After She Calls Him Short

SAN MATEO, California — A man who allegedly bit off his wife's lip after she called him short has rejected a plea offer and will instead go to trial next month, according to the Associated Press.

Police charged Akano Nzerem, 54, of South San Francisco, with felony counts of domestic violence, mayhem, false imprisonment, battery and making criminal threats. He also faces a count of child endangerment.

Prosecutors contend that Nzerem pushed aside his teenage daughter and grabbed his wife in a "bear hug" at which time he allegedly bite off her bottom lip.

Police recovered the severed lip from the floor of the Nzerem's home, but surgeons were unable to reattach it.

The incident stemmed from an argument in which Nzerem's wife called him "short", Steve Wagstaffe, chief deputy district attorney for San Mateo County said.

While awaiting trial, Nzerem is free on a $500, 000 bond, which his wife made possible by bonding their home for the $50,000 needed to get Nzerem out.
In Nigerian culture, women are often treated as second-class citizens and must obey their husbands.

Police Hunting For Suspected Condom Thieves in Florida

Residents of Polk County, Florida: Lock your doors and shut your windows, there are condom thieves on the loose.

That's right, detectives and police in Polk County, Florida are fervently searching for two young men, one of whom is accused of stealing a box of Trojan condoms from a Sears store in Lakeland on May 13.

The police have posted Crime Stoppers leaflets (at the right) throughout the county, and have appealed for the public's help in finding these two dangerous men armed with deadly prophylactics.

The leaflet displays a still picture from the store's surveillance camera which shows two young white males with one of the men apparently holding in his hand the box of Trojan condoms he is accused of stealing.

Apparently, it is an emergency when a box of condoms is stolen in Lakeland, Florida.

Once again, what else can you say, except "only in Florida."

Get Updates on Paris' Prison Time.

There is a rumor that a photo of Paris in her jail cell from early this morning is available, however, it is likely to be sold to a celeb site like TMZ. Stay tuned by signing up for MTB's RSS Feed.

In a controversial, but not surprising, announcement today, a Los Angeles County judge reduced Hollywood socialite and hotel heiress Paris Hilton's 45-day jail sentence to 23 days for "good behavior".

More specifically, the 23 days will be granted if, the judge said, Hilton is well-behaved. (What the heck is Paris doing in this video clip?)

"I want to emphasize that her sentence has not been cut," Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman told Steve Whitmore of AFP.

Paris Hilton Bible Jail Clink June 5"But under Los Angeles county regulations she will receive good behavior credits at the start of her sentence. Provided she behaves well, she could be released after 23 days."

On May 4, an LA judge ordered Hilton to serve a 45-day prison sentence for driving on a suspended license.

UPDATE: PARIS HILTON BUYS BOOKS!!!!
Just weeks after using a 7th grade vocabulary word - "unwarranted" - in reaction to her jail sentence, Paris Hilton is apparently preping for jail by "reading" the Bible and buying books about Buddah. Ha, Ha, Harie, Harie...

Since then there has been a frenzy of coverage, leading Hilton to boo-hoo to the media and skip a court appearance on an unrelated libel case because her psychologist said she was too "emotionally distraught and traumatized" by the whole affair.

The decision to reduce Hilton's sentence was made on the condition that she "behave" while housed in the "special needs" sector of the county jail reserved for inmates like public officials, police officers and others that in the prison culture would be a target for violence.

In fact, an inmate, especially someone who is looking at 25 years, would gain enormous credibility and respect in the prison and street gang culture and "networks" for injuring or killing a high-profile target.

Paris Hilton hanging out on beach, Paris Hilton Nudes, semi-nude, hot paris hilton photosSo, in that sense, it is completely reasonable for the safety of Paris Hilton, the prison guards and staff and the larger prison population that she be segregated.

Whitman would not release any details about any possible extra security measures for Hilton during her time in the 12 two-bed cells of the special needs sector.

Hilton is ordered to begin her sentence on June 5.

Popular News, Videos, Photos and Scandals of the Past 30 Days

In case you missed any of the tantalizing news of the past 30 days, here's a comprehensive recap of some of the stories, issues and videos that made news of the past month.

Minus Imus – Chipping At "The Old Boys Club"

A pathetic attempt to apologize and pass the buck at the same time on Al Sharpton’s radio show did not help Don Imus, the old ‘shock jock’ radio host, repair the inexcusable, abusive, sexist and racist remarks he made about the women’s basketball team at Rutgers University.

On Sharpton’s (who is unquestionably a hypocrite and bigot himself) show Don Imus also said: “I can’t satisfy you people.” Those may be his famous last words.

Airport Video Shows Astronaut Waiting For Attack

Orlando police released video footage from the Orlando International Airport in Florida from June 5. Police say the video shows former NASA astronaut Lisa Nowak "waiting for" romantic rival Colleen Shipman.

Moments later, Nowak reportedly attacked Shipman in the airport parking garage. Nowak's trial is set for September.

Explosions in the “Security Zone” (aka “Green Zone”)

Watch as a camera rolls when a bomb goes off in the security “green zone” of Baghdad last month. The bombing came only a couple of weeks after another bombing in the security zone that freaked out the U.S. ambassador to Iraq but the Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki didn’t even flinch.

Peek-a-Boo, CSPAN C You

If you haven't been the Cheney Uses Bush To Hide video clip, check it out. By now, many people are convinced that Cheney, aka Dr. Wicked, or Mr. Saddam-Had-Chemical-Weapons, led the way to Iraq (gotta pump up Haliburton, who just happened to get the biggest contracts after the invasion and occupation).

Cheney really is Dr. Wicked - he's creepy, aloof, incompetent but not impotent vice president. Somebody’s got to run the asylum.

CSPAN captured an unusual video clip that shows Mr. Cheney standing near the bushes (the green, fluffy ones) about 30 yards away from the president during an outdoor White House press conference at which the president was speaking.

Vidiot of the Month

Who can forget the moment caught on tape that allows all of us to make fun of W’s puppeteer, or ‘right-hand man’, in a way never possible before. (Flash and video artists, splicers and mixers should have a blast with the Rouge Rove Rap tape.)

All indications are that there was an overwhelming consensus that Karl Rove made a Major Catastrophic (MC) Rove Ass of himself at this year’s annual and self-indulgent political and media “Correspondent’s Dinner” party in Washington, D.C.

Unfortunately, I have to make NBC News reporter David Gregory the runner-up for actually “dancing” and apparently enjoying himself with Karl “Bounce Rap” Rove. Ugh. (Where's that vomit bag I took from the airplane?). If the media is going to cozy up with politicians, then I say Ann Coulter should take Dickie Chenie quail hunting (hint, hint).

Digging The Archives: XFiles Spin-Off Predicted Attack on World Trade Center

The Lone Gunmen, an X-Files spin-off television series, aired on FOX as a pilot on March 4, 2001. The theme of the pilot was based on a story of 747's hitting the World Trade Center, eerily similar to the attacks that took place six months later.

That’s right the women, Edna Parker of Shelbyville, Indiana, (in photo from ShelbyNews.com) 114 years old and fellow Hoosier 113 year old Bertha Fry met to celebrate Parker’s birthday. In doing so, the women sailed broke the old Guinness World Record of 219 years by 8 years!

If that wasn’t enough of a birthday surprise, Parker was also granted with the Guinness World Record for the “Oldest Living Woman (USA).”

Officials from the Guinness organization were in attendance for Parker’s birthday to certify the records and document the event for the 2008 edition of the Guinness World Records, set to hit the book stores on August 7th.

Man With No Arms and One Leg Eludes Police in High Speed Chase

It's not the first time Michael Francis Wiley has taken police in Florida on a high speed chase. The remarkable part is that Wiley has no arms and only one leg.

For about eight minutes on Friday, Wiley, 40, sped through the streets of downtown New Port Richey, Florida until the police called off the chase out of fear for the public's safety.

New Port Richey Police issued an immediate arrest warrant for Wiley who was soon apprehended and now awaits trial for various traffic and drug charges.

Wiley has been arrested so many times for driving on a suspended license that he now faces a felony charge for that crime alone. Wiley has previously served time in prison for the same violation and for kicking a police officer.

Wiley lost both arms and a leg following an electrical accident when he was 13 years old. In the ensuing years, he taught himself how to drive with just one leg. That's right, one leg.

In fact, he had a valid driver's license for many years in Florida because he was able to pass the driving test. Now he faces up to five years in prison.

Homeless Get Free Pizzas From A Dead Man

A Tennessee convict executed on Wednesday has received his last meal wish after he died.

Philip Workman,53, requested his last meal be a vegetarian pizza delivered to any homeless person near the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution where he was executed at 2 a.m. EST on Wednesday.

But prison officials refused his request. When news of Workman's request was published in the local media, some people in the community were devoted to making it happen.

In all, nearly $12,000 worth of pizzas where delivered to homeless shelters across Nashville on Wednesday.

Workman was sentenced to death for killing a Memphis police officer in 1981 during a robbery at a Wendy's restaurant.

Griffith Park Fire in LA Rages Out of Control Lighting Up The Night Sky

Update: 12:15 pm PST, May 8, Wednesday: Fire officials in LA say the Griffith Park fire is 40-50% contained and evacuations have been called off. No reports of injuries or major structural damage. More than 500 firefighters worked throughout the night to contain the fire, which had blazed out of control most of the evening producing spectacular scenes of massive firestorms. Live video feed from KTLA. The following is the official story published on Tuesday.

The Griffith Park fire that started earlier today in Los Angeles is now burning out of control creating a spectacular orange glow that lighted up the night-time sky with huge orange flames and sporadic flares of firestorms that exploded along side and behind the famous Griffith Observatory.

Nearly 500 firefighters are battling the blaze which has now engulfed approximately 400 to 600 acres of land and now threatens residential neighborhoods. Residents of one neighborhood have been evacuated. No reports of damage to structures have been reported.

As of 9:25 pm PST, the Griffith Park fire is raging out of control, with firestorms bursting behind the famed Griffith Observatory and ridges and canyons not far from the Hollywood sign.

KCAL News is reporting that the fire command center that was centered in the parking lot of the Observatory had at one time been threatened by the flames, but they were doused by fire engine trucks and air tankers.

Despite the spreading fire, the LA City Fire Department told KCAL News that the fire was 30 percent contained. But watching the fire on television tonight, it looks like the fire is far from being contained.

No injuries have been reported except burns suffered by a man who police are investigating as a possible arsonist connected to the fire. Other reports say the man was homeless and had fallen asleep in the park while smoking.

While there have yet been no additional orders for evacuation, nervous residents in the Hollywood Hills are beginning to take precautions just in case.

The fire is expected to burn all night long, but the real test will come in the morning when things begin to heat up again.

Weather forecasters expect another unusually hot and dry day in Los Angeles on Wednesday with winds and very low humidity (only 2%) fueling the flames.

This year's fire season has arrived earlier than normal due to one of the driest winters ever recorded in the LA Basin.

Stay tuned to MTB for continuous updates, photos, videos, eyewitness accounts, police and fire reports, weather forecasting and more as updates are published on this page.

This latest fire is nearby a fire set by arsonists last March that at one time threatened the famed Hollywood sign.

A fire in Los Angeles' Griffith Park is burning out of control threatening LA landmarks like the Gene Autry Museum and causing the evacuation of hundreds of animals, birds and other creatures from the Los Angeles Zoo.

As of 5:40 pm PST, zoo officials say they believe the fire no longer threatens the zoo or any animals. Check out People Coverage of the fire.

A report from the Associated Press claims police are questioning a person of interest who was seen running from the fire. The man reportedly has suffered burns, but hospital officials are not releasing any details. There have been no other reports of injuries.

Go to the MTB website to watch a live webcast showing five helicopters and nearly 150 fire fighters battling the blaze.

The LA County Fire Department have brought in air tankers to drop retardants on the fire.

As of 5pm PST, nearly 200 acres of land in Griffith Park has burned and there has just been a fire jump into an area of high power lines, according to the LA fire department.

Another area of homes in the Hollywood Hills is now being threatened as well. Fire officials say they will be fighting this fire throughout the night, so
stay tuned to MTB for updates as they come in.

The California Highway Patrol is reporting that highways all around the area, including the famous 101, are backed up for many miles. Los Angeles is experiencing unusually warm temperatures and low humidity with temperature today reaching near 100 degrees.

Weather forecasters said conditions will cool down by Thursday when the marine layer begins to move in bringing cooler temperatures and higher humidity.

Brush and trees in the area are extremely combustible due to one of the driest winters on record. Fire officials are worried that the fire season has begun so early (even though this is being called an arson fire) this year.

Southern California receives almost no rain from April t
o November, which means there are many months ahead for bigger fires, the ones that really worry fire officials.

Man Vomits Bags of Heroin on Air Flight to Australia

A man who swallowed a reported 51 balloons of heroin forced a Vietnam Airlines flight bound for Sydney, Australia to make an emergency return to Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat Airport after the man began vomiting nylon bags, according to the airlines security chief Tran Tien Dung.

An hour and a half into the flight, a flight attendant saw passenger Nguyen Kant, 36, vomit a red nylon bag
and lose consciousness. The airplane returned to Tan Son Nhat Airport. At no time was the airplane or other passengers in danger.

"Our medical staff on land immediately suspected that the passenger had swallowed drugs as he showed typical symptoms of heroin shock," Tran told the Thanh Nien Daily. Doctors said that at least one balloon burst open, causing pure tar heroin to leak into Kant's blood stream.

Hospital officials reported that Kant defecated 9 additional balloons and an ultrascan revealed 40 similar balloons of heroin still in Kant's stomach weighing more than one pound. There are no reports of Kant's medical condition or whereabouts.

In recent years, at least four Australians of Vietnamese descent have been caught trying to smuggle drugs from Vietnam to Australia. Vietnam issues a severe penalty for possessing, trafficking or trading more than 1.32 pounds (600 grams) of heroin - certain execution.

UK Man Wants Compensation for Impending Death Spending Spree

A British man who was told by doctors that he only had months to live went on a spending spree thinking his final days were almost up.

Two years ago, John Brandrick, 62, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and told that he would likely die within a year, according to Sky News.

With limited time to live, Brandrick quit his job, gave away or sold nearly all his possessions - except for the suit he planned to be buried in - spent his savings on dining and travel and ceased making his mortgage payments.

A year later Brandrick was told he did not have a tumor but simply a non-life threatening inflammation of his pancreas.

"When they tell you you've got a limited time and everything, you do enjoy life," Brandrick, from Cornwall in the west of England, told Sky television.

"I'm really pleased that I've got a second chance in life... but if you haven't got no money after all this, which is my fault -- I spent it all -- they should pay something back."

Brandrick says that he may sell his home or sue the hospital that misdiagnosed his condition. The hospital stated that in reviewing the case, the diagnosis would not have been different.

Not dying is a good thing, but living is hard without money.

While he is free of cancer, the man with the inflamed pancreas is flat out broke.

Judge Gives Paris Hilton 45 Days in LA County Jail; Will She Really Go to Jail?

UPDATE: May 28: Paris Pampering Prep for Prison?

A judge in Los Angeles has sentenced celebrity Paris Hilton to 45 days in jail for violation of probation for driving a vehicle on a suspended license.

The 26-year-old Hollywood tabloid magnet and socialite heiress to the Hilton Hotel fortune has had numerous encounters with the police in the past year, which ultimately led to the judge's decision.

Hilton along with her lawyer, Howard Weitzman, argued in the Los Angeles courtroom that Hilton did not know her license was suspended even though court documents show she signed a ticket acknowledging she knew her license was suspended.

The signed ticket was found in her car's glove compartment when Hilton was stopped by an LA County Sheriff on February 27 for speeding and driving without her car's headlights on.

Hilton was charged with violation of her probation which is what led to today's sentence.

Los Angeles County Judge Michael T. Sauer was not persuaded by arguments presented by Hilton nor her lawyer during the proceedings and ordered Paris Hilton to serve 45 days at the Century Regional Detention Facility (pictured below) in Lynwood, California.

Hilton could have received 90 days in jail for the probation violation. Additionally, Hilton received a number of reprieves for her driving violations and court-order alcohol counseling treatment. In fact, the prosecutor pointed out, Hilton never showed up for the alcohol counseling.

The prosecutor also argued that the 90-day term was appropriate for all of those reasons and the fact that Hilton never took responsibility for her actions, even attempting to pass blame on others - like her publicist Elliot Mintz, who was fired by Hilton just hours after the judge's sentence (update: Mintz has been rehired - 5/18).

Judge Sauer moved the proceedings along after dismissing one witness who testified on Hilton's behalf. The witness, a family friend, basically asserted what everyone already knew: that Paris wasn't very smart.

The judge wasn't falling for it and Sauer also made it clear that he did not believe Hilton's attorneys did not tell her that her license suspension had been upheld.

"She wanted to disregard everything that was said and continue to drive no matter what," Sauer said.
You can read and watch video reactions from Paris, her mother, her lawyer and others about the "unwarranted" jail sentence.
Hilton will begin her sentence June 5 unless an appeal (includes exclusive video of Paris from Access Hollywood) is successful in either delaying the sentence, modifying it or most unlikely, having it dismissed altogether.

Update 5/18: Hilton's lawyers have withdrawn their appeal after realizing the sentence was not going to be overturned but instead reduced.

After the sentencing, Paris Hilton's mother, Kathy, reportedly shouted in the courtroom, "this is pathetic."

Paris Hilton did not say anything to reporters or fans as she exited the courtroom.

However, she later told a gaggle of reporters and cameras outside her home that she thought the judge was "unfair" and the sentence was "cruel and unwarranted."

When Paris Hilton entered the court this morning 18 minutes late and past the metal detectors, she paused to powder up for the judge (as shown in the accompanying video from TMZ).

When she reports to the facility, Hilton will be kept from the majority prison population for the safety of herself, the staff and the prison population. She will be kept in a separate cell block that is reserved for "special needs" inmates like police and celebrities.

Paris Hilton will spend 22 hours a day inside a jail cell that she will share with a cellmate. The jail cells - 12 in all - each have double bed bunks, a toilet, a sink and that's about it, according to reports from others who know the facility. (Can you imagine Paris Hilton sitting on a toilet inside a jail cell? Yikes! Please don't take pictures of that.)

Hilton will of course not be allowed to take a cellphone or blackberry or really anything else except for some personal effects and books. Do you think this might be the one chance that
Paris, out of sheer boredom, will actually read a book? No way!

It would not surprise me at all if the producers of the "Simple Life" are trying to come up with a way to make an episode out of Hilton's incarceration. On the other hand if they haven't even thought about it, that would be a brain-freeze guaranteed.

- Read what people are writing about Paris Hilton going to jail .
- Watch Paris Hilton's
post- arrest video.

Stayed tuned to MTB and get the site feed for updates as they come up, plus full coverage of Paris' trip to the slammer. If nothing else, it may make her a bit more humble.

Mr. Hilton, Paris' father, doesn't really believe that he and his wife Kathy can schmooze their daughter away from serving her time, does he?
